PTFE is the most inert but its poor resealability makes it unsuitable for multiple injections or storage. For layered septa such as PTFE/silicone, the chemical resistance of the septa is that of PTFE until the septum is punctured. Once punctured, the silicone layer is exposed and able to react with the sample/solvent so the chemical resistance of silicone should be considered when using these septa.

The butyl septa on the PTFE surface can be used in the headspace sample bottle to evaluate the injection activity and the penetration efficiency of methyl bromide on the activated carbon. The septum can be used to seal the vial during liquid sample collection for unmodified benzene analysis using the HPLC method.
