Everything to Know About Hplc Vial Septa

Jun. 12th, 2024
Septa are usually made of one, two, and three layers. Each layer of the septa can be different or the same color. HPLC vial septa are usually made of materials such as PTFE and silicone. Therefore, HPLC vial septa are chemically resistant. HPLC vial septa provide a good seal. In this comprehensive blog post, we will take an in-depth look at HPLC vial septa, exploring their types, advantages, and applications for optimal performance.

Different Types of Septa

Septa are generally divided into two types, pre-cut septa and non-pre-cut septa. However, the number of layers and materials of septa are different. The hplc vial septa provided by Aijire are generally divided into 4 types. PTFE septa composed of one layer of material. Composed of two layers of material, the vial septa has PTFE/silicone septa and pre-slit PTFE/silicone septa. And PTFE / silicone / PTFE septa composed of three layers of material. Aijire customizes different hplc vial septas. You can choose different or same colors for each layer. You can also choose pre-cut septa or non-pre-cut septa.

PTFE septa

Solid 0.010" thick PTFE layer provides excellent chemical inertness and withstands the most aggressive solvents. The film facilitates penetration by most needles. PTFE septa are not resealable and must be used for analyzes with short intervals between injections or single injections middle.

PTFE / silicone septa

PTFE/Silicone septa are ideal for most HPLC and GC applications. They can meet reseal and purity requirements. The PTFE laminate thickness is 0.005 inches. They are pure, inert, have excellent reseal properties, and withstand multiple punctures. These septa are available in a variety of hardnesses. These septa accommodate different types of needles.

Pre-Slit PTFE / silicone septa

PTFE/Silicone septa have a 0.005" thick PTFE layer pressed into the center hole of a high purity silicone layer to facilitate needle penetration and vacuum release when drawing large samples. Pre-slit septa provide similar chromatographic performance to non-pre-slit septa. However, they are less resistant to aggressive solvents. Pre-slit septa are highly recommended for Shimadzu, Hitachi, Alliance, and other autosamplers with finer needles.

PTFE / silicone / PTFE septa

The septum is made of high-purity, medium-hard silicone with a 0.003” thick PTFE layer pressed on both sides to avoid slag while still maintaining good re-sealing properties. T/S/T septa are recommended for use between injections or use internal standard methods for the most important applications, such as trace analysis, etc.

Advantages of Hplc Vial Septa

HPLC vial septa ensures sample integrity. HPLC vial septa plays a vital role in preventing contamination and achieving reliable analytical results. Here are the benefits of HPLC vial septa.

Pre-slit Septa

Pre-slit septa are easier to pierce with a needle. Pre-slit septa have a small pre-slit that allows autosampler needles to penetrate easily without applying excessive force. This minimizes the risk of needle bending or breaking.

Pre-slit septa facilitates smoother needle entry into the vial, making sample access easier. Pre-slit septa help extend the life of autosampler needles.

Non-split septa

Non-split septum provides a stronger seal, effectively preventing evaporation and contamination. This is critical to maintaining the integrity of volatile or sensitive samples. But, PTFE septa are not resealable and must be used for analyzes with short injection intervals or single injections.

Seamless septa have no pre-existing gaps, resulting in greater durability and can withstand multiple punctures. This makes them ideal for long-term storage or repeated sampling.

Application of Hplc Vial Septa

HPLC vial septa are suitable for require good sealing integrity and durability applications. They provide a secure seal that prevents evaporation and contamination. HPLC vial septa are suitable for volatile or sensitive samples. Pre-slit septa are ideal for high-throughput laboratories where needles can penetrate easily. They reduce the risk of needle bending or breaking. They make sample collection easier to increase HPLC operation efficiency.

HPLC is widely used in research in many different industries. For example, pharmaceutical, environmental monitoring, food science and other industries.

HPLC is mainly used for testing in the following industries.

Pharmaceutical industry: tablet dissolution study of drug dosage forms. Control of drug stability. Drug quality control.

Environmental industry: Detection of phenolic compounds in drinking water. HPLC can also be used for biomonitoring of pollutants.

Food and beverage industry: Analysis and detection of additives, preservatives, food pigments, flavors, etc. in food.

Conclusion

HPLC vial septa ensures sample integrity. HPLC vial septa plays a vital role in preventing contamination and achieving reliable analytical results. By choosing the appropriate type of septa could optimize their HPLC processes. The pre-slit for ease of use and non-slit for superior seal integrity. High-quality HPLC vial septa is important for achieving accurate and reliable chromatographic results.
